Democrats Far More Likely to Monitor Impeachment ‘Daily or Hourly’ and
Expect to Argue with Family About Constitutional Proceeding
WASHINGTON, DC, Nov. 21, 2019 – Discussions over the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump will be on the holiday dinner menu for millions of Americans this Thanksgiving. Nearly one-quarter (23%) of Americans expect to debate impeachment with family members next Thursday, and more than half of those who anticipate such a conversation believe that it will lead to an argument at the dinner table.
That’s according to a new survey of 644 U.S. adults conducted by Vrge Strategies completed last week.
According to the survey, Democrats are far more likely to discuss impeachment (32%) than their Republican (19%) and independent counterparts (20%). Additionally, Democrats are also more likely to be monitoring impeachment proceedings “Daily or Hourly” (60%) than Republicans (48%) and independents (42%).
Given the extreme interest, it is not surprising that impeachment discussions over turkey will ruffle some feathers. The survey finds that more than 35% of Americans (38% of Republicans, 43% of Democrats and 30% of independents) believe that an impeachment of President Trump would affect their everyday life.
Americans from all parts of the political spectrum also agree (64%) that impeachment will affect the nation’s economy. Yet, whether the impact is positive or negative depends on party affiliation. More than two-thirds of Republicans (67%) believe that impeachment will have a negative effect on the economy, while 45% of Democrats think it will have a positive impact.
“Americans agree on one thing — that the impeachment process affects their personal lives and the economy,” said Josh Zecher, partner of Vrge Strategies. “But that’s where the common ground ends. Fierce partisan divides are evident across the board on impeachment, even beyond the political maneuverings on Capitol Hill. Americans are impassioned about impeachment, and this will make for a spirited Thanksgiving for those with friends and family on the other side of the political aisle.”
Other findings include:
— The possible impeachment of President Trump will affect the holiday shopping budget for 14% of Americans.
— 16% said that how much they allocate to savings this year will be impacted by a possible impeachment.
— 79% of Democrats think at least one of the following industries would benefit from an impeachment of President Trump – Technology, Energy, Automobile, Retail, Healthcare.
— Only 26% of Republicans think at least one of the following industries would benefit from an impeachment of President Trump – Technology, Energy, Automobile, Retail, Healthcare.
— More than 76% of Republicans think at least one of the following industries would suffer from an impeachment of President Trump – Technology, Energy, Automobile, Retail, Healthcare.
— Only 37% of Democrats think that at least one of the following industries would suffer from an impeachment of President Trump – Technology, Energy, Automobile, Retail, Healthcare.
